A One-Room Schoolhouse on a County Crossroads: Seward County, Nebraska, 1938

The archive record for this photograph says it plainly: Nebraska’s school system was “very little consolidated,” and “these little white schools are on county crossroads throughout the state.”

John Vachon photographed this one-room schoolhouse in Seward County in October 1938. One room, one teacher, and every grade in the neighborhood — close enough for farm kids to walk to, and small enough that the whole district fit inside a single building.

Schools like this one were the standard across rural Nebraska, not the exception. The crossroads schoolhouse was simply how education worked when the students were scattered across farms and the roads between them were dirt.
