Deer Camp: Kilbourn City, Wisconsin, About 1899
The title on this stereograph card tells the whole story: “In a camp of deer hunters. Two in and two more coming.”
It was photographed and published by H. H. Bennett of Kilbourn City, Wisconsin, around 1899 — deer camp as it looked more than 125 years ago. The season then meant a tent, a rifle, and meat for the winter.
Deer camp traditions run deep in Wisconsin, and this card is a look at where they start: hunters in camp, more on the way in, in the last years of the nineteenth century.
